Star Power

An epic science-fiction convention prepares for landing.

"So Jayne Cobb and Spock walk into a Denver hotel…" sounds like the start of a particularly geeky joke, but it's the truth today as Starfest 2008 brings the actors behind those movie roles (Adam Baldwin and Zachary Quinto, respectively) — as well as several other big-name genre stars — to town. The three-day fest also offers a sizable contingent of Klingons, a Stargate, a legion of Stormtroopers and quite a few witches and wizards inspired by The Boy Who Lived (that's Harry Potter, if you aren’t up to speed on your J.K. Rowling). Then there are the seven sci-fi authors in attendance, the costume contest, a video-game tournament with cash prizes, horror-movie premieres and an art show.

Starfest begins this evening at 6 p.m. and wraps up at 7 p.m. Sunday at the DTC Marriott, 4900 South Syracuse Street. Tickets are $29 for a single day and $49 for the whole weekend; children ten and under get in for half-price. For more information, including a full schedule, go to www.starland.com or call 303-777-6800.
Fri., April 18, 6-10 p.m.; Sat., April 19, 9-midnight; Sun., April 20, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., 2008
