Never Forget

Memory, honor and education fuel the Holocaust Remembrance Program.

The annual Governor's Holocaust Remembrance Program, hosted each April by the local chapter of the Anti-Defamation League, always couches its somber yet necessary message in changing ways: One year, survivors might speak. Another year, people who've witnessed genocide in other contexts might relate their experiences. This year, the unique twist is a program featuring Maria Reyes, a onetime child gang member whose inspired reaction to reading The Diary of Anne Frank for a class was dramatized in the film Freedom Writers. Tonight, as the ADL's guest speaker, Reyes will tell the story of how she and other "unteachable" students changed their lives.

"Every year, we have the same three goals: Remember those who perished, honor our survivors and educate the community," says ADL spokeswoman Nina Sundell. "This year, we're choosing to emphasize the educational viewpoint." To that end, the group will not only host the motivational Reyes, but will include an exhibit of narratives from Colorado Holocaust survivors printed on large storyboards.

The ADL's remembrance program takes place tonight at 6 p.m. at a venue in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance; call 303-830-7177, ext. 214, or e-mail Denver@adl.org.
