Children of the Corn

In Pueblo mythology, the Corn Mother is the ultimate earth mother: Like the corn she emulates, this deity dies and is renewed again and again, carrying in her kernel the very secret of life. She's not unlike the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, which returns annually (CHAC's just turned thirty) to celebrate art born of a culture soaked in sunlight and covered over by earth. And so she's a fitting inspiration for Return of the Corn Mothers: A 30-Year Celebration of CHAC, a new group exhibit featuring a varied selection of works addressing the regenerative, feminine qualities of life.

The show kicks off tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. in CHAC Norte, 772 Santa Fe Drive, with a Grand Fiesta Cinco de Mayo celebration; Aztec dancers and musician Martin Espino, who performs on ancient and indigenous instruments, will both be part of the free evening.
