Cho Funny

Standup comedy is best seen live. The atmosphere of a live set (not to mention the alcohol usually involved) has caused me to laugh at jokes that I didn't actually think were funny. It takes more skill — and better jokes — to create a standup routine that people will still laugh at when you’re not live and in person, such as the classic Eddie Murphy show Raw. Or Margaret Cho's I'm the One That I Want. I first saw Cho do this routine on the big screen in a small independent movie theater. Her candid, poignant discussion about trying to make it in show business as a queer, short, round Asian woman brought tears to my eyes when I wasn't laughing my abdominal muscles sore.

Cho's back with more: Her new one-woman show, Beautiful, marks her first standup tour since 2005, and tonight it stops at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place. Tickets are $28.50 to $45.50; visit www.tickethorse.com or call the theater box office at 303-623-0106 to purchase yours.
