Talkin' Trailer Trash

Connect with an interactive work of art.

Artist Sherri Lynn Wood likes to say that her Mantra Trailer is "parked at the intersection of imagination, evangelism and propaganda." Inspired early on by slogan-swathed church signboards she encountered throughout the South, the interactive traveling meditation chamber with a recording studio inside bears a rotating series of watchwords on its exterior. But its impact only takes off from there, as Wood drives it across the country, stopping at museums and schools to record the inner mantras of the people who climb, one at time, on board to talk to themselves.

"It's also inspired by my interest in the power of repetitive language and how it operates in our culture," Wood adds, alluding to everything from mass-media slogans to the ways in which people center themselves. "It's about finding the intersection where there are a lot of conflicts in our culture and finding common ground."

Wood will park her trailer in the south parking lot at the Art Students League of Denver, 200 Grant Street, this evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m.; participants are invited to record mantras inside and interact with pre-recorded mantras outside while they wait.
