Up Chuck

Author Chuck Palahniuk looks for the comedy and tragedy in pornography.

To write Snuff, a book about a porn queen at the center of a record-setting gang bang, novelist Chuck Palahniuk, who's in town tonight, had to immerse himself in the medium, so to speak — and he found much to admire. "I love the fact that porn always ends the same way," he says. "It's the same reason why my grandma went through a hundred Harlequin romances a year. They're going to go through the same stations of the cross, and everybody's going to come. The end."

Not so Snuff, whose climax will likely thrill readers who've joined the zealous fan base that's gathered around Palahniuk since the 1996 publication of Fight Club — and appall those who haven't. Either way, watch out for the money shot.

Palahniuk talks and signs at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street, at 7:30 p.m. Learn more about this free event at 303-436-1070 or www.tatteredcover.com — and read an extended Q&A with Palahniuk at blogs.westword.com/latestword.
