Star Wars

Jeff Peckman may be spaced out, but alien expert Stan Romanek is the real little green man.

As the world now knows, a man named Jeff Peckman is fighting to get an initiative on the November ballot calling for the formation of an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver — which would deal with any problems that might arise should a group of day-tripping ETs decide to stop by. And last Friday, Peckman upped the ante by showing footage (to select members of the press, no photos or recording allowed) of an actual living, breathing alien peeking through a window. But here's the thing...

The video was just a piece of a much longer video shot by one of Colorado's own, Stan Romanek. And Stan? He's a weird guy. I was fortunate enough to catch a much longer dog-and-pony show he himself did for a standing-room-only crowd on the Auraria campus a few months ago. I'm fairly sure I was the only member of the press in attendance, seeing as how the vast majority of the crowd was drawn from the ranks of the UFO faithful. In short, Stan was preaching to the converted. And I was one of them.

Yes, I believe in UFOs. I believe in alien life. My wife and I have seen (and reported to the Mutual UFO Network) one UFO ourselves — not a spaceship, not an alien, but a truly unidentified flying object, outside Wagon Mound, New Mexico, six or seven years ago — and I have spent time since then hanging with the UFO community, trying to learn.

Which was why I knew Romanek's name. He is, to quote from his own website, www.stanromanek.com, at the center of "the most scientifically documented [case of] human/extraterrestrial encounters in the world. There have been well over 100 individually unique experiences that Stan has encountered since December, 2000 that remain unexplainable. Being abducted is only one of many experiences."

Among the believers, Romanek is a big dog. He's like Wayne Newton in Vegas. The man really packs 'em in. And when he showed the full cut of the alien-peeking-through-a-window video to the faithful? Needless to say, the room went nuts.

But not me. I was just disappointed. It looked so patently fake, so ridiculously cheap and goofy. In the course of the presentation, Stan had laid out so much other evidence that was so much more compelling (including examples of automatic writing, mathematical equations, additional photos and videos of UFOs and more) and plenty that wasn't (recorded phone calls from aliens, photos of aliens in his back yard that looked like nothing more than plaster dime-store garden gnomes, a purchase order for a computer bought for him by mysterious "helpers") that the final reveal — the little squash-headed "alien" blinking and staring into the house — just seemed to me like bullshit icing on a highly questionable birthday cake.

Setting aside any question of whether or not the footage is real or faked, Peckman's recent showing worked out well. It's gotten press all over the planet (and possibly beyond), and Peckman is the one getting all the ink. My question, though, is where's Stan in all this?

Oh, that's right. He's the one holding the video, refusing to post it to the web or allow it to be shown in public, accepting no sort of peer review or criticism beyond a few attempts at having the expurgated footage authenticated by local film experts. The reason? He's in the process of trying to complete (and sell) a documentary about himself: Starseed: The Stan Romanek Story, coming soon to theaters near you.

And to me, this is the most disturbing part. I understand the impulse to try and make a buck off what, if true, would be the biggest news story in history, but seriously? Some things are more important than a dollar. And if this video truly is as real as Romanek and Peckman claim it is, it needs to be released, in toto and immediately, so that everyone can have their look, have their say and make up their own minds as to whether or not "they" really are out there.

To commentor Lisa above, Yes Lisa Romanek we have heard your true beleiver nonsense before. Since you and your husband have refused to let anyone see these "scientific reports, video evidence, etc. So why don't you put your money where your mouth is and show MUFON and others the full weight of evidence you claim exists, or shut up. Oh, and he was shot at? Give up the police report,or at least tell us what county or city so we can pull the report ourselves. And please do not tell us the aliens told Stan not to report it. It is very hard to to keep that a secret unless you guys were out in the middle of nowhere. You also claim to your discredit that Stan has never set out to make a "buck." Yet you and Stan have never allowed anyone except your devoted followers such as Ann Romanek (Stan's sister) Rick Nelsen, Mark Stahl, and a few other devotee's either experience or look at the stuff. I should know since they all have told me this and while Stan was at Mark's UFO video show I asked if I could come to his house and record any events. Stan made the comment, "Oh, he wants to come to my house and experience something." Your husband with comments like that (and there are witnesses who heard him say this to me) is a condescending jerk, period. It is time for the Stan "Experiences" to be put on the back shelve at the local bookstore. You guys have had your fifteen minutes of fame. Also why don't you tell people about the darker side of Stan? I won't go into it here, but you know what I am talking about. Good luck with your documentary film as I can already see your husbands book is dropping in price and popularity on Amazon faster than a rock. I hope you guys were not given ahuge advance by the publisher, because if book sales do not cover the advanced, you guys will be digging into your penny bank to pay it back.

Stan and his experiences have never been about making a "buck" as you have said in this article. As for the Rocky Mountain Paranormal Group that was also mentioned and they are not about proving anything is real, they have attended talks given by Stan and have taken photos from Stan's website with only one goal in mind, debunking. You only hear what they want you to hear, that Stan is a liar, and that they have seen all of his evidence these statement are untrue. They have not read the scientist reports, never seen the full videos of any of the evidence, nor seen the actual physical evidence, very few people outside of the scientists and those close to our family have. In them saying they have seen it all is just proving what I am trying to say, that they do not care about what is real and true, only what gets them attention for being the bad guys, who do not agree with us.We expect some people not to beleive us, but not to go to the extent that this group has to be hurtful and harmful. They show pictures on their web site of recreations of what Stan and I have experienced but sadly they can not recreate the fear and the turmoil that these actual event instilled in our family. There are a lot of people who have experiences and are to afraid to talk about them, Stan however is not. He has been threatened many times over the past 8 years to keep his mouth shut, and was beat up by 3 men and told to keep his mouth shut, but he refuses to do that just because some people do not want what he has to say to be heard. Stan was shot at this past summer, in another attempt to scare him into not talking about what he has experienced. It worked ! He was pretty scared but also angry that someone would go to that extent to shut him up. Most people would have given up a long time ago. Believe what you want to believe, and don't believe what you don't want to.

I would think that if someone had proof of alien visitation, the potential global impact of that would prompt any person of good morals to immediately come forward with everything they had. It is interesting that this does not seem to be the case here. When Rocky Mountain Paranormal (RMP) posted a copy of that youtube video on their web site to comment on it's quality and authenticity, they were told by Romanek's lawyer to take it down. Here is what RMP said about that: By the advice of Mr Romaneks lawyer, we have removed his video & images. We originally felt this was fair use, as we were publishing a snippet of it for the purposes of political commentary, and felt that purpose was of greater value to society. But Mr Romaneks lawyer has informed us that it could hurt Mr Romaneks market for this content. We thought it was about a political issue. Apparently, Mr Romanek has other plans. The political purpose mentioned involved Jeff Peckman's ballot issue in Denver to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission, and his use of this video to help bolster his points. So what I can glean from all this, is that the video's fair-use distribution has been denied because it might hurt Romanek's Book/DVD sales, which will include it. While at the same time, Peckman apparently can continue to use it as he will for his political purpose, yet the video can't otherwise be criticized, because it can't be shown by anyone except Romanek and Peckman. Apparently the ballot issue has been moved again, and is now scheduled for the May 2009 ballot (assuming they get the necessary signatures to get it on that ballot). I expect we'll here more about all this once that time frame rolls around.
