Fat Chance

Accompanying a proud self-proclamation as one of the birthplaces of mountain biking, Crested Butte has announced the schedule for its annual Fat Tire Bike Week, which takes place today through June 22. The beginning of the festivities will be boosted by an increased population, courtesy of a coinciding stop by the Ride the Rockies bicycle tour, which expects to bring an additional 2,000 cyclists to the town. Highlights of the week itself include group rides for all skill levels, a bike rodeo, relay races, live music, a pig roast, a downhill chainless race and a generally party-hearty time. Also of interest to those die-hard off-road cyclists is the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in downtown Crested Butte, which will host a screening of the mountain-bike history documentary Klunkerz.

Those disappointed by the literal reference to fat tires need not despair: One of the main draws of the week, which is sponsored by New Belgium Brewery, is daily access to a beer garden at which tickets may be redeemed for frothy brew.

Register online at www.ftbw.com or in person at the Crested Butte State Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during Bike Week. The whole kit and caboodle is yours for a mere $90, which includes some booze, a meal, a T-shirt and entry into the chainless race ($20 without the package deal). If you’d rather take things as they come, the rate is $25 a day. But keep this in mind: You might feel left out if you show up to the chainless race without a costume -- and you could maximize your enjoyment by keeping one on for the whole week.
