It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… a pig?

For Su Teatro, nothing is impossible. Not even flying pigs.

The Chicano theater company will present the provocative (and long titled) satire, When Pigs Fly, Men Have Babies, and Peace and Justice Rule the World tonight as part of the National Performing Arts Convention.

When the magical Bruja Lady places a paradoxical spell on the barrio, the local band of scoundrels and scapegoats cope by creating mischief, wreaking havoc, and generally misbehaving.

“In a way, When Pigs Fly is an homage to classic sitcoms like Chico and the Man and Sanford and Son,” says director and playwright Anthony J. Garcia. “In mainstream television, the characters are always trying to save the world. But in the barrio, people can’t be concerned with solving the big issues. They’re just trying to survive.”

While the characters in Pigs might not be concerned with the big issues, they can’t quite seem to avoid them. Immigration reform and gender politics are just two of the contentious subjects these barrio misfits bumble upon. If mainstream theater sometimes takes itself too seriously, Su Teatro’s got the cure.

“We say, la locura cura. Craziness is the cure,” Garcia says. “It’s all our flaws and inconsistencies that make us human. And let’s face it: That’s funny.”

Catch When Pigs Fly… tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Ricketson Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. For tickets and information, please contact El Centro Su Teatro at 303-296-0219, and visit www.suteatro.org.
