Maestas Work

Layer Upon Layer tells a digital story.

Surreal visions and beautiful, complex abstract designs populate the world of Robert Maestas, a Colorado artist originally from New Mexico who works primarily in a digital medium. In his work, bizarre figures and twisted tableaus inspired by his life’s trials and tribulations are rendered in bright colors and bold shapes. Plastic Chapel will put Maestas’s work on display in Layer Upon Layer, a show highlighting the artist’s stencils, art and design. “I saw a piece of his that he had in a group show at the Fabric Lab — I think it was last year or maybe two years ago — and I’ve been trying to book him since then,” store owner Dea Webb says. “His style is so different and so cool that it just struck me.”

An opening reception starts tonight at 7 p.m. at 3109 East Colfax Avenue, as part of the surrounding block’s regular “second Saturday” art events; admission is free. The show runs through July 9. Visit www.plasticchapel.com or call 303-722-0715 for more information.
