Magic Wanda

Wanda Sykes’s standup is fall-down funny.

Wanda Sykes, who begins a two-day engagement here tonight, isn’t as big a star as she deserves to be, and she’s making Hollywood talent pay for the oversight. Because Wanda at Large and Wanda Does It, two sitcoms built around her, failed to find an audience, she currently steals scenes in supporting roles, as she’s done regularly on TV (her credits include Curb Your Enthusiasm and The New Adventures of Old Christine) and a string of mostly terrible movies (Monster-in-Law, Evan Almighty). Still, the chuckles she generates in these settings can’t compare with the guffaws she prompts with microphone in hand, delivering the sort of hilariously blunt observations that turned her book, Yeah, I Said It, into a bestseller. She’s got star power, whether producers know it or not.

Sykes headlines at 5 and 7:30 p.m. tonight, and in two more shows tomorrow, at the Comedy Works, 1226 15th Street. Tickets are $38. Get details at 303-595-3637 or www.comedyworks.com.
