This production is very unique in that all the actors play their own instruments. The actors are the orchestra, says Genevieve Miller, public-relations manager at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Theyre literally acting out the play while carrying around their instruments. This really accentuates how beautiful the music is compared to the dark storyline. I think thats part of the appeal: Theres this macabre storyline that goes along with this beautiful score. Its a crime drama set to music.
The pared-down, Tony Award-nominated musical opens tonight and continues through June 29 at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; the show, which includes many actors from the original Broadway production, starts at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $225; for information, call 303-893-4100 or go to www.denvercenter.org.
