Multi-Tasking Theater

The actors in Sweeney Todd do more than merely emote.

A few months ago, I witnessed multi-tasking in overdrive as a busy guy Rollerbladed, walked his dog and pushed a stroller — all while maintaining an animated conversation on his cell phone — without missing a step. I can’t even drive and change out my CD at the same time, or talk on the phone while running on the treadmill. However, tonight’s performance of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street takes multi-tasking to a whole new level.

“This production is very unique in that all the actors play their own instruments. The actors are the orchestra,” says Genevieve Miller, public-relations manager at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. “They’re literally acting out the play while carrying around their instruments. This really accentuates how beautiful the music is compared to the dark storyline. I think that’s part of the appeal: There’s this macabre storyline that goes along with this beautiful score. It’s a crime drama set to music.”

The pared-down, Tony Award-nominated musical opens tonight and continues through June 29 at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; the show, which includes many actors from the original Broadway production, starts at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $225; for information, call 303-893-4100 or go to www.denvercenter.org.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: June 17. Continues through June 29, 2008
