Joke and Cover

A couple of months ago, Brad K. Evans joined friends at a movie, and although he doesn’t remember the flick they saw, he vividly recalls the fun they had hurling popcorn at the screen, each other, and anything else in range of their lethal kernels. Hence the inspiration for tonight’s inaugural Food Fight Comedy Nite, during which audience members will be encouraged to express their opinions about participating comics by giving them the gift of groceries — at a high rate of speed.

“We’re going to have cream pies, boxes of Twinkies, tomatoes,” notes Evans, who’ll host the evening’s festivities as well as subsequent editions scheduled throughout the summer. “We’re definitely going to be monitoring people at the door to make sure they’re not bringing apples or cantaloupes,” he adds. “We don’t want anybody to be wounded.”

Fortunately, the dozen comics slated to perform won’t be entirely defenseless. “We’re hoping the comics will have food as well,” Evans points out, “so that if the audience sucks, they’ll be able to retaliate.”

Sounds funny, in a potentially painful way.

Food Fight Comedy Nite takes place at 10:30 p.m. at the Lion’s Lair, 2022 East Colfax Avenue; admission is $5. For more information, call 720-350-8411 or go to www.denverfoodfight.com.
