Kid for a Cause

Devastating tornados and comedy don’t really mix. After all, there are only so many jokes that can be made about flying houses and bicycles, à la The Wizard of Oz, before someone gets offended. But not tonight. The Comedy Works is partnering with local comics to put on Comic Relief for Windsor, a show to raise funds for the victims of the town’s May tornado.

The benefit was hatched after one local comic saw the tornado’s damage firsthand. “Lori Callahan had a meeting a few days after the tornado,” says Comedy Works director of marketing Susan Collyar. “She called us in tears and said, ‘We have to do something.’” And so they did. The club expects to raise $10,000 through ticket sales and a silent auction for the Windsor Community Foundation, which addresses community needs through donations. The evening will feature Denver-based comics Steve “Mudflap” McGrew from radio station KYGO, Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald of Animal Planet, and Last Comic Standing’s Phil Palisoul and Matt Vogl, among other comics and surprise guests.

Comic Relief for Windsor takes place at the Comedy Works, 1226 15th Street. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.comedyworks.com, 303-595-3637, or the Comedy Works box office, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. The show is 21-and-up; doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the program starts at 8.
