Revelation

In the darkest of times, some turn to faith, some turn toward science, and everyone needs a little bit of humor to lighten things up. All of these elements — particularly the humor — come together in a special summer staging of Deborah Zoe Laufer’s End Days, presented by Curious Theatre Company as part of the National New Play Network.

The story focuses on a post-9/11 family dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy. The father is depressed at having lost friends and co-workers in the attacks. The mother becomes born again and starts receiving clues from Jesus about the imminent Rapture. Their goth daughter is given a book about Stephen Hawking by a sixteen-year-old Elvis impersonator who’s in love with her, and she starts talking to a hallucinatory Hawking.

“I know this sounds completely ridiculous, and it sort of is, but it’s very funny,” explains Curious marketing director Tonya Malik. “I think it’s a comedy about the underlying role of faith, or believing in something, during an epic tragedy in our society.”

End Days plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at the Acoma Center, 1080 Acoma Street, through July 26. Tickets are $10 tonight and tomorrow; $25 for opening night, July 12, which includes a pre-show barbecue at 7 p.m. and dessert after; and $22 for all other shows. Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: July 10. Continues through July 26, 2008
