Hotel Stories

Watch The Hot L Baltimore in the Barth lobby.

Tonight’s premiere of The Hot L Baltimore was timed perfectly.

“We’re all homeless now with the housing crisis,” says director Terry Dodd. “This is environmental theater with a really big, beating heart.” The play, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford Wilson in 1973, will be staged in the lobby of the Barth Hotel, 1514 17th Street. The Barth contains 62 housing units for seniors with disabilities; proceeds from the show will benefit Senior Housing Options, which oversees the LoDo hotel and thirteen other such facilities.

The play’s run was timed to coincide with the Democratic National Convention; the story’s nostalgia for the past, coupled with its staging in a location deeply rooted in that past, sends a strong political message. A celebrity walk-on (and possible non-celebrity walk-ons) at every performance will increase the sense of place.

Hot L Baltimore performances begin at 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, through August 23; tickets ($50 to $100, with group discounts available) are available at www.seniorhousingoptions.org or by calling 303-595-4464.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8:30 p.m. Starts: July 17. Continues through Aug. 23, 2008
