Soap Box

The Art Students League of Denver raises its voice.

I think the world is going to shit. And not in that new-age, Nostradamus, Mayan-calendar doomsday-silliness sense — in the we fucked-ourselves-and-we’re-not-doing-anything-about-it sense. What pisses me off the most is that we had to sit back and watch eight years of a belligerent administration that hasn’t bothered to hide its contempt for all things right or rational — not to mention a Democratic Congress that hasn’t done a thing about it. Face it: The only good that came from the Bush/Cheney years was Lil’ Bush. That’s what I think.

At the Art Students League of Denver, 200 Grant Street, the Politics and Art in America exhibition gives ASLD students and staff a chance to express their beliefs. Because of the Democratic National Convention, “this is the perfect time to challenge our artists to really express their personal politics and how they see what’s happening in this very volatile world,” says Leona Lazar, executive director of the League. “They can be as specific as they want. They can do it in a medium of their choice. There will be abstract and representational, and hopefully we’ll have some 3-D sculpture and mixed media.”

Admission to the exhibit is free. For more information, call 303-778-6990 or go to www.asld.org.
