Fissure Mystic (due at the Larimer Lounge on Saturday, July 26) lives up to the imaginative suggestion of its name, which came to one of the band's members in a dream. With a career that spans right around ten years, Fissure was almost completely unknown until 2005, when it began playing out at clubs and warehouses. The act's expansive sound can perhaps be most easily traced to the experimental guitar rock of Sonic Youth, while its most recent music reveals more of a jazz influence, with flourishes of Mahavishnu Orchestra. The stories the songs tell and feelings they express capture a sense of wonderment and whimsy that comes from personal and artistic exploration unfettered by a need to fit in. Fans of Slint will appreciate the dusky dreaminess of Fissure Mystic.
