The Color Purple

According to the Bible (specifically Exodus 20:5 — which is part of the Ten Commandments), the sins of fathers shall be passed down to the third and even fourth generation of their families. Perhaps that’s why issues such as alcoholism tend to run strongly in genes and behavior; to shed the burden of the past, which could become the future, and begin anew has been one of the major struggles of man since Moses left Egypt.

And that’s the epic story behind Purple Rain, the 1984 Prince film that accompanied his album of the same name, which features such hits as “Purple Rain” (duh) and “When Doves Cry.” The plot centers on the Kid (Prince) who meets a lovely songstress, Apollonia; the Kid has to keep his band, the Revolution, together while desperately endeavoring not to become a shadow of his abusive father.

Purple Rain screens as part of Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre; the movie starts at dusk, but come early to enjoy funkadelic sounds by U.S. Pipe as well as a live Guitar Hero challenge on stage. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; purchase yours at any King Soopers store or by calling 1-866-464-2626.
