Alan Alda at the hi-dive

Anyone who's been paying attention to Denver music for the last several years has probably seen or heard of Voices Underwater and Streamlined. The latter's Luke Goodhue had written memorable space-rock riffs, while Chris White had been the impressively talented bass player in the former. For his part, White was the backbone of Voices' ability to create complex, intricate, powerful rhythms that tastefully shied away from outright prog rock, and until recently, was also the muscular right hand of the rhythm section in Astrophagus. Alan Alda (due at the hi-dive on Saturday, August 23), which played its first shows last summer, finds the pair weaving White's art-rock rhythms perfectly with Goodhue's crunchy atmospherics for a sound that's a bit like Joan Armatrading jamming with a new lineup of Fugazi.
