Ultimate Rush

Durango hosts a competition for Frisbee fans.

One of my favorite pastimes growing up was playing what we called Ultimate Frisbee (also known simply as “Ultimate,” leaving out the trademarked Frisbee name). Sort of like football or rugby, the game involves passing the disc from one player to the next until the end zone is reached — and no running when you have the disc in hand.

Intrigued? Head to Durango’s Riverview Elementary School, 2900 Mesa Avenue, for the Durango Ska Brewing Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tournament. Registration is $25, and teams will be created by drawing names from a hat in order to ensure an equal number of beginning, intermediate and advanced players on each team. Bring a dark and a white T-shirt with you, plus party clothes for tonight’s shindig at Ska Brewing, 545 Turner Drive. “We try to promote it as an excuse to get down to Southwest Colorado,” notes Durango Ultimate’s Trent Simmons, so it’s also a perfect reason to spend some time hiking, camping and enjoying the great outdoors. Visit www.durangoultimate.com for information and www.active.com to register.
