Pressing Matters

The printing press gets its due at the Historic Print Shop Open House.

Today’s kids might know their way around a keyboard or how to surf the web with confidence, but as Earl Noe of the Book Arts League observes, the workings of a printing press are a different story entirely.

“When they see the ink and type pressed to the paper, they’re fascinated,” he says, adding that it’s quite a switch from watching a sheet of paper popping out of a laser printer. And Noe and the league are betting that even digitally acclimated adults will share that sense of wonder during today’s free Historic Print Shop Open House at the historic Bunkhouse at Ewing Farm, 1915 North 95th Street in Lafayette, where, after some struggle, the league’s been able to set up shop. Featuring traditional nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century typesetting equipment and manual presses donated to the league by the University of Colorado, the shop, which is located in what remains of a Boulder County Centennial Farm, is a true piece of living history — in every way possible.

Visitors are invited to try their hand at working the press, watch demonstrations and enjoy refreshments between 1 and 4 p.m.; for details and directions, visit www.bookartsleague.org/ewing.html.
