Summer Lovin'

Say farewell to the season at a blowout in Five Points.

If you’re starting to feel depressed about the first chills of sweater weather, hold those tears until next week, because tonight is the Summer Blowout 2008, a steamy evening of jazz, Western swing, blues and comedy at the Roxy Theater in the historic Five Points neighborhood. “We’re excited this is being held at the Roxy,” says promoter Elaine Craft. “They recently changed owners, and they’re doing more entertainment and keeping the whole Five Points area pretty vibrant.”

Hosted by DJ Woogie Fresh of LiveWire Urban Radio, the night is meant to continue Five Points’ rich cultural legacy with a program that celebrates 25 years of Denver’s music scene while highlighting the digital-age addition of online radio. Fresh, known for his “sounds that pound,” will count down a top ten of Denver’s best live music. Denver’s Renaissance Woman of Comedy, Star, will co-host the event. “She’s been doing comedy for about seven years now, and recently returned from Los Angeles,” notes Craft. “I think she’ll be a wonderful hostess.”

Tickets, which include a barbecue buffet before the show, are $15 in advance at www.ticketleap.com or $20 at the door. The Roxy is at 2549 Welton Street; the buffet starts at 7 p.m., and the show is at 8. For information, contact Gold Nugget Productions at 303-620-1801.
Sat., Sept. 13, 8 p.m., 2008
