If Carrie Bradshaw thought New York City was all about sex, the characters in Candace Bushnell’s latest novel, One Fifth Avenue, think it’s all about real estate. In a time when most people are worried about making the payments on their median-priced $200,000 home, the characters who live at (or aspire to live at) One Fifth Avenue have loftier goals -- like getting a piece of the multi-million-dollar, 7,000-square-foot penthouse apartment of recently deceased socialite Louise Houghton.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bushnell novel without sex, too, since her biggest success to date has come from dissecting the love lives of women in Sex and the City and Lipstick Jungle. Looking at the volatile New York City real-estate market has added a depth to her work: Although she still focuses on sex, socialites and social climbing, the cast of characters has become more diverse.

One Fifth Avenue is Bushnell’s fifth novel, and she expertly juggles the stories of actress Schiffer Diamond, screenwriter Philip Oakland, gossip columnist Enid Merle and many others while spreading enough sparkle and splash to keep the pages turning.
