After opening Slim 7 nearly two years ago, Bill Ward is hoping to move his now-closed club from Larimer Square to Cherry Creek. At the end of August, Ward packed up Slim 7, which was tucked into a small space off an alley, to make way for what will become the kitchen and a private party room for Troy Guard's new restaurant, TAG, slated for a February 2009 opening. Ward has been eyeing another long, narrow spot in Cherry Creek, and although it's a bit smaller than the original Slim 7, it has a patio. He hopes to sign a lease within the next few weeks and is working out other details — including the name of his new place. Maybe Slim 8? It all depends on the club's final concept and whether it will serve food.
While he finalizes those plans, Ward has been busy revamping Below, another basement-level club he opened in Larimer Square last year. He's switched out the furniture, installed a new, interactive music system, and completely changed the decor to create a new feel with a better flow. Below now has more of a lounge-type of vibe, with a bigger seating area for bottle service. The club is still open Wednesdays through Saturdays, though, with DJs spinning on the weekends.
At the same time Ward was opening Below, he opened a late-night pizza spot in the neighboring space. Originally he'd hoped to call that joint Pi, but the new Hilton Garden Inn at 1400 Welton Street had chosen Pi for the name of its restaurant; ultimately, Ward went with Pie Hole. Now he's closed his Pie Hole, selling the spot to Andrew Labbe, who's turned it into Abode. Labbe may revamp the room in the next month or so and plans to bring in local and national DJs; in the meantime, he's keeping Abode open after the bar closes at 2 a.m., making it the only after-hours club in LoDo.
The addresses of both Abode and Below are 1422 Larimer Street, but to find these two subterranean clubs, you need to enter through the alleyway between Larimer and Lawrence off 15th Street.
Club scout: This weekend, Bart DeLorenzo celebrates the grand opening of Sheer, his new club at 10633 Westminster Boulevard in the Westminster Promenade. And he could have the market cornered in Westminster for sophisticated dance clubs with VIP hosts and bottle service — particularly when you factor in the crystal candelabras and the big dance floor with table service around the perimeter. DeLorenzo calls the multi-level, casually chic club a "downtown Denver alternative." And he plans to prove it September 26 and 27, when he teams up with Sunset Limousine to bring the LoDo crowd up to the club. DeLorenzo will be send four twenty-seat stretch limos down to LoDo at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with another four going out at 11 p.m. both nights. Champagne will be served on the ride out to Sheer, and the limos will return downtown by 1:30 or 2 a.m. On regular weekends, DeLorenzo plans to attract club-goers with DJs spinning dance, hip-hop, house, electronica and Latin fusion.
In its heyday, the Deadbeat Club was one of the prime spots for dancing outside of downtown. Midtown Beat took over the three-story, multi-room club in late 2006, but it didn't last a year. Maybe Skin, which recently moved into the space at 4040 East Evans Avenue, will have better luck. Tatsu, Gyn-Syn and Pariah will be at the decks on Wednesdays; KS-107.5 will do live remotes from the club on Thursdays, when DJ DeVonte Luv spins; DJ Dizzy D will spin on Fridays; 95.7/The Party will do live remotes on Saturdays, when DJ Luv is back on deck; and Sundays are ladies' nights, with DJ F/X.
Lastly, DJs Dogboy and Tyler Jacobson will be spinning northern soul, Motown, boogaloo and rare grooves at Rockbar (3015 East Colfax Avenue) on Tuesday, September 30, for the latest installment of their Mile High Soul Club, which happens the last Tuesday of every month.
