If anything’s been a success for the Denver Public Library’s Fresh City Life series, it’s the knitting track. “We’ve offered it for long time,” says Fresh City Life honcho Chris Loffelmacher. “The knitting classes are tried-and-true, and they don’t run out of gas. But because the intermediate-level classes are much more relaxed than the beginner level, people can talk and enjoy each other’s company more, and when they end, I often hear students say, ‘I wish we could just continue to hang out and knit!’”

Hence, KnitFlix, a laid-back movie-and-knitting night, was born. It’s a stitch-and-bitch with a soundtrack that’s catching on more and more every time it’s offered. Tonight’s KnitFlix will no doubt follow that trend: Featuring the Halloween-ish 1958 comedy, Bell, Book and Candle, with James Stewart and Kim Novak, it offers seasonal fun along with the built-in camaraderie.

But don’t think about going, Loffelmacher warns, if you like watching your movies in a dark room with absolute silence: “There will be chatting, munching and flicking of needles. It’s just like watching a movie at someone’s house.” Not to mention, these casual flicks are simply projected on the wall of the Denver Central Library’s Fresh City Lounge, hidden away in the first-floor space where the library shop used to be.
