Dirt into Diamonds

George Lopez headlines Comedy Works South’s grand opening.

“It’s not every day you can buy tickets to see Jimmy Fallon or George Lopez,” says Comedy Works media contact Eva Magdalenski. It’s even more unusual to have the chance to see them both in the same month, particularly when you’re not living in one of those magical cities recognizable by initials. However, thanks to Comedy Works owner Wende Curtis and the opening of her new Greenwood Village location at 5345 Landmark Place, some of the biggest names in comedy will be right here in DNV. “Wende worked really hard to make Denver a great city for comedians to perform,” says Magdalenski. “Thanks to her working to build contacts, people who live here get to see really great comedians on an intimate stage.”

Tonight at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. (and tomorrow night at 7 and 9:30 p.m.), George Lopez brings his darkly heartfelt comedy to the grand opening of Comedy Works South. Famous for turning dirt into diamonds, Lopez focuses less on airplane food and more on his gritty, somehow hilarious experiences with poverty, emotional neglect and health problems. “If you grow up emotionally neglected,” Lopez said in Time magazine, “you do a deeper type comedy.”
