Monster Mash

Old-school and new-school monster movies have it out.

A wise man once said, “There is nothing new under the sun.” And that’s particularly true when it comes to Hollywood, which retells story after story in celluloid form. The question becomes, then, which is better — the old version or the new version?

It’s an issue the Denver Film Society tackles every month with its Old School New School program, which is screening the 1954 classic Godzilla along with 2008’s Cloverfield tonight at 6 p.m. “It’s a double-feature program geared toward teens and their parents,” explains DFS programming manager Keith Garcia.

“Kids of today might look at Godzilla as being way outdated and totally be about Cloverfield, whereas parents might look at Cloverfield and say, ‘Well, we had Godzilla,’” Garcia continues. “Let’s bring it together and let the parents and the teens have it out in the discussion."

Godzilla will screen first, followed by a discussion and Cloverfield. Pizza is included in the ticket price, which is $12 for students, kids and DFS members or $15 for the general public. It all goes down at Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli; visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
