Zombie Nation

The Bug Theatre brings Night of the Living Dead to life.

Just in time for both Halloween and the fortieth anniversary of the film’s original release, the Bug Theatre is bringing the zombie classic Night of the Living Dead to the stage. Director Kris Hipps says she’s been a fan of the film since seeing it on afternoon creature features as a kid. “It was always Night of the Living Dead or Plan 9 or something about a giant spider,” she remembers. “That film always freaked me out, and I’ve wanted to do a stage adaptation for a while.”

Hipps promises the stage version will be close enough to the original to please die-hard fans while injecting a bit of humor into the mix to lighten things up. In an unusual twist, the performance will be a mix of live action and pre-filmed scenes. Everything that takes place within the claustrophobic farmhouse happens on stage, while the few key scenes that take place outside will be presented on a screen above the stage, in grainy black-and-white footage shot by Duane Brown for this production.

The play opens tonight at 8 p.m. at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street, and runs through November 1. Tickets are $15 general admission, $13 for students and seniors, and $10 for anyone dressed as a zombie. For more info, call 303-477-9984 or visit www.bugtheatre.org.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 3. Continues through Nov. 1, 2008
