Running Scared

Costumed competitors race through Washington Park.

Running through Washington Park at dusk with ghouls and vampires on your coattails might constitute a bad dream most nights, but tonight it’s just the Scream Scram, a spooky way to get in shape for any actual running you might have to do from monsters (or cops) on Halloween. This is the ninth year the Scream Agency is hosting the 5K, which benefits the Colorado chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Sean McCauley Hope Foundation.

Lora Ledermann, the agency’s founder, says the costume portion of the event is more competitive than the race itself — and makes it more fun. And because this race is thrown by an ad agency, it’s known for creating much cooler T-shirts than the standard race fare. This year, a local illustrator drew a batdog for the shirts, which Ledermann hopes will also inspire racers to bring out their dogs in costume. There’s a 100-meter Spooky Sneak for kids, too — and this year, mod-ern-day explorer Eric Larsen will race alongside them with tires tied to his back to replicate pulling a canoe on his recent One World Expedition.

The race is at 6 p.m. Registration begins at 4:30 on the diagonal road in Washington Park. It costs $29 for adults and $19 for kids ten and under or seniors sixty and older. (Advance registration is $25, or $15 for kids and seniors.) Everybody gets a T-shirt, food, Halloween candy and a chance to win prizes. Call 303-694-2030 or visit www.active.com.
