Vaudeville and Beyond

If you are unaware that the Democratic National Convention took place in Denver in 1908 -- and again in 2008 – well, then, you’re beyond our help and should probably consider investing in some method of mass communication soon (a newspaper or radio would be a good, safe place to start).

In the meantime, And Beyond Theatre Company has got you covered: The troupe’s members have been augmenting the DNC celebrations with special performances this year, and today and tomorrow, they’ll share their interpretation of what a vaudeville show might have looked like in Denver on the weekend before the 1908 election between William Jennings Bryan (D) and William Taft (R).

Featuring ragtime piano by local treasure Hank Troy, the Give My Regards to Vaudeville show will also include the Suffering Suffragettes singing group, can-can girls, the Ignition barbershop quartet and much more. The hour-long show takes place (appropriately) at the Grant Avenue Community Center, which was built in 1908. The center is at 216 South Grant Street; tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Call 303-641-8796 or visit www.andbeyondtheatre.org.
Sat., Nov. 1, 8 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 2, 2 p.m., 2008
