What do modern-day hip-hop freestyle battles have in common with Chaucers Canterbury Tales? Nothing, most people might say, but Baba Brinkman isnt most people. A native of British Columbias tree-planting subculture, Brinkman became enamored with hip-hop at the tender age of eleven. He managed to combine his passion for freestyle with his college education, writing his undergraduate and masters theses on the connections between freestyle battles and Chaucers infamous storytelling competition.
All of this has led to Brinkmans critically lauded fringe production, The Rap Canterbury Tales, which has toured around the world to numerous cities and festivals -- including, but not limited to, Prague, Montreal, Edinburgh and San Francisco.
Add Boulder to that list: Brinkman will perform The Rap Canterbury Tales at the Old Main Chapel on the University of Colorado at Boulders campus tonight at 7 p.m.; his epic, cross-generational masterpiece is free and open to the public. Visit www.babasword.com for information.
