What do modern-day hip-hop freestyle battles have in common with Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales? “Nothing,” most people might say, but Baba Brinkman isn’t most people. A native of British Columbia’s tree-planting subculture, Brinkman became enamored with hip-hop at the tender age of eleven. He managed to combine his passion for freestyle with his college education, writing his undergraduate and master’s theses on the connections between freestyle battles and Chaucer’s infamous storytelling competition.

All of this has led to Brinkman’s critically lauded fringe production, The Rap Canterbury Tales, which has toured around the world to numerous cities and festivals -- including, but not limited to, Prague, Montreal, Edinburgh and San Francisco.
