Bare the Soul

A new rock opera examines closeted gay love.

Bare is a rock opera similar in style to Rent,” explains Mike Scheneman of Broken Leg Productions. “But Rent follows the story of La Bohème, and this sort of follows the story of Romeo and Juliet. But instead of Romeo and Juliet, it’s a little bit more Romeo and Romeo.

“It’s about Peter and Jason,” Scheneman continues. “They are both roommates at a Catholic school, and they’ve also been lovers for about four years. It’s their senior year, and Jason is not ready to come out, but Peter is. This obviously causes a rift between the two of them, and they part ways. There’s a girl in the school who’s been after Jason. She seduces him and ends up pregnant with his baby, and all of his secrets kind of get busted out at the same time.” Ouch.

“I was asked to use my production company to create some cabarets for alto [restaurant],” adds Scheneman. “Our plan was to do a Christmas show, but that doesn’t really work before Thanksgiving.” Instead, Scheneman is directing Bare: The Essentials, a revue of the full musical. The idea is to familiarize the public with the show so that when June — and Pride weekend — rolls around, Scheneman and Broken Leg Productions can perform the full production.

Bare: The Essentials opened last night at alto, 1320 15th Street; the run continues every Sunday and Monday night through November 24. A limited dinner menu and full bar will be available. Admission is free, but there is a two-drink minimum required for audience members; visit www.brokenlegproductions.org or call 303-893-2586 for information.
Mondays, Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: Nov. 10. Continues through Nov. 24, 2008
