Fine art and craft curve together in a delicate tête-à-tête in Jennifer Falck Linssen: Beyond Katagami, a new exhibit opening today at the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center, 400 Quail Road in Longmont. Linssen, inspired by the Japanese craft of katagami (or cut-paper stencils) used for the printing of intricate openwork patterns on textiles, strove to turn the stencils beautiful in their own right, though often thought of as tools into an art form all their own. Linssens three-dimensional stenciled forms, meticulously carved, dyed, sewn and woven together into gracefully twisting shapes augmented by metal and wire, go a long way toward achieving that end.
Attend a reception tonight or view the show daily except Mondays through March 22; Linssen will give a lecture on her work and the history of the stencil form at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28. Visit www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum for more information, or call 303-651-8374.
