Road Trip!

Buntport Theater’s latest example of its consistently original performances is a timeless road trip set somewhere between ancient Rome and the modern world. “Anywhere But Rome is the story of Ovid and two characters from Greek mythology: Tiresias, a blind prophet; and Io, a woman who has been turned into a cow,” says Buntport player Evan Weissman. “They’re on a road trip going anywhere but Rome because Ovid was exiled. Along the side of the road, they’re picked up by a couple — Louis and Carol — who are also on a road trip and involved in their own self-exile.”

Set somewhere just south of time and space, this minimalist production reinforces the idea of exile with its simple set design while exploring many of the themes of Ovid’s Metamorphosis. “It takes place in a sort of nowhere place,” says Weissman. “It’s happening in a car — or elements of a car — but it doesn’t take place anywhere in particular, like the New Jersey turnpike. And while the couple is more present-day, the other three are sort of timeless.”

Anywhere But Rome opens tonight at 8 p.m. at Buntport, 717 Lipan Street; tickets are $16 for general admission and $13 for students and seniors. The show runs Thurs-days through Saturdays through December 20. For more information, go to www.buntport.com or call 720-946-1388.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 7, 3 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 14, 3 p.m. Starts: Nov. 14. Continues through Dec. 20, 2008
