Silence is Golden

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra channels Charlie Chaplin.

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra has gone to the movies before, it’s true — but, notes CSO spokesman Andrew Mathis, never quite like this: During a rare full-length, intermission-free CSO Goes to the Movies evening, the city ensemble will perform the live score during a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s comic tearjerker City Lights.

“This is not just another talkie show,” Mathis enthuses. “This program will showcase and feature the orchestra in a different fashion than other films have, fea-turing a score that was written by Chaplin himself.” Starring Chaplin in his classic Little Tramp role as the love interest of a blind flower seller, the bittersweet tale of mistaken identity is a swan song of the silent era and one of Chaplin’s most acclaimed works, as well as one of his own favorites.

City Lights flickers on at 7:30 p.m. in Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; for tickets, which range from $15 to $73, go to www.coloradosymphony.org or call 303-623-7876.
