Gang of New York

What goes around comes around, and as the contemporary success of neo-burlesquers, jug bands, Gypsy jazz and vaudevillian revivalists proves, old-timey is new-timey for a whole new generation of strongmen and tattooed ladies. So it’s the perfect time for a band like the Wiyos, a new York City-based acoustic string combo with a bent for physical comedy. Wammo of the Asylum Street Spankers calls these folk-festival favorites “way too good to open for my band ever again,” and they’re clearly meant to be seen live, with their encyclopedic repertoire performed on a whole collection of twangy instruments, washboards and kazoos. Hi-de-ho!

You’ll have your chance tonight at 8 p.m. when the Wiyos, along with the Boulder Acoustic Society, take the stage at Swallow Hill Music Hall, 71 East Yale Avenue. Admission is $12 to $18; to reserve tickets, visit www.swallowhillmusic.org or call 303-777-1003.
Sat., Nov. 22, 8 p.m., 2008
