“It’s like a mob scene,” says Pam Wilson, executive director of the Northern Aurora Business Association. “Once Santa gets out of the helicopter, all the kids run up to him and they want to talk to him and hug him. It’s pretty cute, but it’s a mob scene.”

And why, you might ask, would Santa need to squeeze his fat ass into and out of a helicopter each year? Isn’t it obvious? Because “reindeer only fly on Christmas Eve, so Santa has to find another way to get around and see all the kids,” Wilson explains.

Today’s Santa Landing and Community Tree Lightingevents begin at 5 p.m. at Aurora City Park, 9700 East 16th Avenue, then proceed to Fletcher Plaza and the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, 9898 East Colfax Avenue, where Santa will dutifully listen to gift requests and take pictures (for $5). A warning to opportunistic parents thinking of bailing on the grand entrance to get a sweet spot in Santa’s greeting line: Don’t bother — the library is closed until the Big Guy arrives.
