Sharles Johnson is a hero to his children -- and the arch-enemy of Jefferson County.

Sharles Johnson was on the phone with his mother when the doorbell rang at his home in Bolingbrook, Illinois. It was a Tuesday afternoon, and the stay-at-home dad was tending to his four youngest kids while the other two were finishing the school day and their mother was working at Target. He went to the door and saw three cops standing on the porch. One was holding a photo that looked like a blown-up version of Sharles's Colorado driver's license.

Sharles and Rebekiah Johnson's children were taken away for nearly four months in 2004.

The family celebrated Shakalel's first birthday at home in Illinois last month.
The family celebrated Shakalel's first birthday at home in Illinois last month.

"Are you Sharles Johnson?" the cop asked. "There's an arrest warrant out for you in Colorado."

Sharles didn't have to hear the charges — felony theft and three felony counts of forgery — to know where they'd come from in Colorado: Jefferson County. Four years earlier, his kids had been taken away by the Jefferson County Department of Human Services — and even though he'd been vindicated in that case, Jeffco Human Services was soon alleging that Sharles's family had collected $5,000 in Medicaid, food stamps and other benefits that they didn't deserve. The county had recently sent him a promissory note that laid out a payment plan: $150 a month for three years, and if he missed a payment by ten days, his bill would be sent to collections.

But now, on February 26, 2008 — the day after the first payment was due — police were at his door with a warrant dated three weeks earlier, alleging that Sharles Johnson had stolen that $5,000 in benefits. Sharles quickly got off the phone with his dumbfounded mother — who oversees agents for the IRS — and called his wife, Rebekiah, telling her to get home as fast as she could. Officers with the Bolingbrook Police Department knew of the Johnsons: Rebekiah had just finished their citizens' police academy, because she and Sharles wanted to teach their kids that not all cops were bad, that they could trust authority again. Sensitive to what the family had been through in Colorado, the officers waited the hour it took for Rebekiah to get home instead of calling a caseworker to the house.

Sharles spent the next ten days in the Will County Jail — without bond.

Rebekiah told eight-year-old Sheyenne and seven-year-old Shakiah that Daddy had to go back to Colorado to fight the mean people. Sheyenne sent her father a drawing of him as Superman. "I miss you," it said. "And you gotted us back from the mean people and loved us very much and I'm like you. And you are the greatest superman." Shakiah wrote his father a letter listing all of his siblings' names and ages, and asking him not to forget them.

On March 6, two Jefferson County sheriff's deputies arrived to fly Sharles back to Colorado. Humiliated, he tried to make it look like his handcuffed hands were just in his pockets as he was led through Chicago Midway Airport and onto a Frontier Airlines flight. He spent one night in the Jefferson County jail before his bond hearing the next morning. The judge saw that a $10,000 bond had been set when the case was filed, and the prosecutor argued that it should remain. But Bob Gunnett, Sharles's former neighbor, a 77-year-old retired teacher and Army veteran who'd become an advocate for the family, had brought a copy of the promissory note to court, as well as a receipt for the first payment. The judge asked Bob if he'd be willing to pay a $1,000 bond for Sharles, and Bob said he would.

"The bottom line is that he's alleged to have stolen government benefits," the prosecutor argued. "Apparently, he's agreed that he stole government benefits or there wouldn't be a note to pay them back. We extradited him from Illinois to bring him back here at taxpayer expense. Without sufficient surety, there's no assurance that he's going to appear in court. So coupling that with his felony history here, we ask the court to leave the bond as set."

But Sharles doesn't have a felony history — in Jefferson County or anywhere else, as he and Bob were quick to point out.

"Bond is $100 cash," the judge ruled. Bob paid it, and Sharles was free. For now.

Sharles Johnson grew up in Flossmoor, a Chicago suburb, across the street from Muhammad Ali's former wife Khalilah and their children, in a house with a maid and a nanny. His mom worked for the IRS; his dad owned gas stations. He was close to both, even after they divorced when he was twelve. They were one of very few black families in a white neighborhood, and Sharles's mom, Curcelia Johnson, says the only time Sharles ever got into trouble was when he stood up to someone picking on his little sister. "He's always loved kids," she says. "When I got married again, my stepson was eleven, and he would come get him and take him to work. He always loved being around kids, mentoring kids."

Sharles moved to Minnesota to attend North Central Bible College (now known as North Central University). Many of his fellow students said they'd never known a black person before, but Sharles liked meeting different people and quickly felt at home.

@Cheryl I think facebook exposure is also to blame. No surprise here breaking rules.....they have at least 3 minor children under the age of 13 signed up for Facebook. "Facebook requires individuals to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account. In some jurisdictions, the age limit may be higher. Providing false information to create an account is always a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. This includes accounts registered on the behalf of under 13 year old children by older parties." someone needs to step in and teach the parents, pastor’s wife can’t help, friended the minor. Too much time spent on empires & allies then monitoring underage fb users. Your mum has been warned to be cautious of your next scheme. Like saying you live in LA.

Order filed *******NOVEMBER 3, 2011******* Excerpts from: http://www.state.il.us/court/R23_Orders/AppellateCourt/2011/3rdDistrict/3100458_R23.pdf 2011 IL App (3d) 100458-U Appeal No. 3-10-0458 Circuit No. 08-AR-970, Will County, Illinois Honorable Raymond A. Bolden, _________________________________________________________________________ IN THE APPELLATE COURT OF ILLINOIS THIRD DISTRICT A.D., 2011 TOM LANGLOIS, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. SHARLES JOHNSON and REBEKIAH JOHNSON, Defendants-Appellants. ______________________________________________________________________________ ¶ 2 The plaintiff, Tom Langlois, sued the defendants, Sharles Johnson and his wife, Rebekiah Johnson, to recover unpaid rent and repair costs for damages the defendants allegedly caused to the rental property. On the day trial was scheduled to begin, Rebekiah agreed with counsel for the plaintiff to settle the case for $18,000. Sharles, who was not in court on the day of the settlement, moved to vacate the settlement, claiming that Rebekiah had no authority to settle the case without consulting him first. The circuit court denied the motion. We affirm ¶ 8 The defendants' sole argument on appeal is that the circuit court erred when it found a valid settlement agreement existed because Sharles did not agree to it and because Rebekiah did not have the express authority from Sharles to settle the case. ¶ 11 Our review of the record reveals that Rebekiah did in fact have the apparent authority to act on Sharles's behalf. Sharles never attended any of the hearings, despite the fact that he was a named defendant and that his name also appeared on the lease that gave rise to the lawsuit.Sharles admitted that "the way that we did it, since we were pro se litigants, one of us did the hearings, one of us did the investigations." Rebekiah attended the hearings and spoke for both herself and Sharles. Counsel for the plaintiff negotiated the settlement with Rebekiah on the day trial was scheduled to begin, as she, once again, was the only one present. When the settlement was announced in court, Rebekiah told the circuit court that she was also speaking for Sharles. The settlement intended to end this lengthy litigation, thereby avoiding trial, a possible judgment of an amount higher than the settlement amount, and further attorney fees. Under these circumstances, we hold that the circuit court properly ruled that Sharles was bound by the settlement negotiated by Rebekiah. ¶ 13 The judgment of the circuit court of Will County is affirmed. ¶ 14 Affirmed.

BEWARE – ‘Social service investigator ‘ has a warrant out for his arrest for disorderly conduct and assault. Ramsey County Minnesota has an active warrant on VFOC, Inc. ‘social services investigator’ Sharles Johnson for disorderly conduct and assault, as of 5/12/11. Warant No. 62-T3-99-647775. Known to travel to different states, keep an eye out for him. He’s an avid liar. I believed Rebekiah and Sharles at one point. He likes to mention their Christian background, but what real Christian has a warrant out for his arrest. The punishment will be worse, now that this boy has other charges on his record – 2004 Menacing and 2010 Theft.. He didn’t show up for court date on March 9, 2011 – Will County, Illinois. He lied in court Sept 2010 Will County Illinois, by saying he lived in Washington ,DC and he didn’t know where his wife was. Got a judgment on her. But documentation signed by them after the court date states she lives at a Chicago address. BEWARE - They avoid paying rent, I wouldn’t rent to them unless you get all rent upfront. First he’ll say the place needs repairs done and want to deduct from rent, then he’ll say things that are wrong with the place, then he will call code enforcement on you and try and stop paying you. Then he will. I hope this information will help other investors, landlords. Two people were fired at a not for profit organization in Colorado, as a direct result of trying to help him. St Charles County Maryland – another landlord case involving them. He ruined my credit and my life. I lost the home.

  • S. Johnson 01/15/2011 2:05:00 AM

We received a few emails and was asked what happen with the case and the trial. I will try and make it brief. Well the DA kept the dates of offenses until Sept 30th 2005 though I left the state 1 yr prior. He finally changed the dates on the 2nd day of trial. He kept the dates out there to open up the statute of limitations. The amount went from $5,500 to $512. Judge Enquist and Judge Russell had a prosecutor attitude. The county asked for a no contact order without having to show why. I challenged it then it got modified I saw Russell and Enquist modify the constitution to fit whatever the county or Da asked for. Human Services was trying to keep me from information I needed that would show the various attitudes, well I still got what I wanted “ miraculously” 1 month or so before trial. I guess they didn’t want the jurors to hear. I read the discovery it was a joke, crazy thing is, Julie Jacobson added more amounts alleged to be overpaid before trial. This was to show monetary loss to the dates, before they didn’t line up. Jeffco Da lost on the fraud charges and dropped another, funny thing is I didn’t fill out the paper work it was the Jeffco human service worker!!!!, Either the DA office is full of airheads or they didn’t think it was going to trial. The lead Da had “retired”, he was the one along with Jefferson County Human Services that sent me the promissory note with confessional language it in, like I can’t read and comprehend. The Jeffco human services stated a few times “They don’t normally accept payment and have charges!” Scott Storey’s office then changed the charges on the 2nd day of trial and Judge Enquist agreed. Funny they had fought to keep those charges 5 months prior and Judge Russell agreed with them. So they get what they want from the bench. I was told they can’t pick Judges it’s whoever is on the docket. And I was born last week. When we tried to present evidence contrary to what the Da was saying Judge Enquist would exclude it saying no or either it’s out of the alleged time frame. I guess it was hard to see her former employers loosing. We had page 287 from the discovery showing Jeffco knew of report and changes but Enquist in all of her impartiality wouldn’t allow it. Yes I have the transcripts. “She is committed to increasing the breadth and depth of her legal knowledge in all areas, with a focus on civil and domestic relations law. She is keenly aware that, given her background as a prosecutor, she must work to avoid any perception of bias in favor of the prosecution in criminal cases.” This was from her review in 2008. You got to laugh when the DA has to cheat to instead of leaving the facts, where they were after 7 years, the truth didn’t need any help. Crazy they originally were going after my wife and somehow this got flipped on me. We embarrassed them from the stand and they tried to make us look stupid. We got to meet the jurors outside as we got on the elevator. One of them told me.” Keep doing what you are doing!” The public defender didn’t challenge the dates or the amounts, why?? Limited resources or ability!!?! He hadn’t done this the entire case. We plan on running a Champaign about these two Judges not being on the bench, when it comes to their retention in a few years. It makes you wonder who they are serving.

  • From Foster Parents 09/29/2010 1:47:00 AM

Brandon was the boy who started Jeffco Colorado involved in the johnson home. The Johnson's wondered what happened to Jefferson Counties "star" witness. Here's what a foster parent wrote: "We are concerned about Brandon and would like to know where he is and if he is doing OK. We would like to know if the Jefferson County in Colorado have been dealing with Brandon’s many problem and disorder issues while in their care. He displayed physical violence and possible sexual disorder. He had a lot of rage, social disorders, defiant behavior. At the time when he left our home, he had desire to become a “Thug”. He had a street name picked out and started to act like one by being upset when another member of our family looked at him. We became concerned for the family’s safety at that point. He constantly lied about various abuse issues concerning foster parents, friends, and family members. The decision to move Brandon back to Jefferson County Colorado was made after discussions were held between his teacher, his social worker with Department of Children and Family Services, and his caregiver. They decided that Brandon needed to be in a facility where he could get the help necessary for him to overcome all his problems and issues. Without such help, he would more and likely end up is serious trouble. We all felt the he was on the path of destruction if he does not change his ways. We hope and pray that Jefferson County Colorado was responsible enough to see that this young man received the proper help".

  • Courtenay Hancock 09/12/2010 6:55:00 PM

Injustice! God bless this family, I have to believe everything happens for a reason, especially in cases like this, lord, have mercy! What scares me is this is something that could have been done to any one of us. Jefferson County did this to an educated, Christian black man, trying to take care of his family. Thank God these nice people got thier children back. $515 dollars of actual debt turned into $5,500 dollar fraud warrant that required extradition, jail time and nearly ruining a family are kidding me???? This family has been through hell. 50 years ago black men were lynched by the "powers that be" by using this same type of legally sanctioned injustice. I am CERTAIN the fact that they are an interracial family contributed to the mistreatment they were dealt, I hope they never go back to this God forsaken county to live. And whoever wrote this (clearly) slanted article had some bias as well, the title alone tells you that. Obama may be the president, but this is still America.

  • Sharles Johnson 06/17/2010 9:01:00 PM

I have received a few emails and was asked for updates. I will try to make it brief. I read the discovery, 2,113 pages it backed up nothing they were saying. I see why the DA office and human services gave it so late. Since they had been looking for me for o long, would not the discovery be complete and without flaw, it had been 4 years. The amount overpayed was changed to $512.00 dollars on the 2nd day of trial. Remember it was $2,300,2,660, 5,184 then $5,500 dollars. The Da changed their mind about us being there until Sept 2005. The discovery and them knowing we won a case in 2004 which gave us the right to leave probably helped correct their memory. This could not have been to keep the statute of limitations open. Integrity would not do that. Crazy thing everything I ever received stated this as an overpayment error and intentional fraud was somehow NEVER checked in the box. The overpayment was recouped by the State of Colorado, why couldn't Jeffco do this. I informed the state and it was done. The promissory note and confessional language written in it, so that when you compare it to the State of Colorado's definition of fraud it's the same wording. Go figure. It's sad when a local government has to try and cheat to win. It says a lot about character and honesty. One of these years I am going to post and publish what was written and what their own discovery said. We find it sad when people have to do anything to get a perception across. But I understand this is what happens when you get weak people in positions of temporary power. I firmly believe that God's court of His justice cannot be manipulated and in heaven we ALL have records. This Judge shows no favoritism. This showed by a greater capacity of evil and the smallness of many people world.

The van I(Rebekiah) was driving was not followed close or given a flat tire. Sharles was changing the tire of his crx. I was driving and not paying attention. I was not looking through my rear view mirror and did not see Sharles behind me. The lakewood police did not fault him for that. I turned abruptly and without warning. I know Sharles gave you the actual police report. While speakng with you on the phone, I made mention of how I don't look through my mirrors unless, I need them. You can call this upbringing or being from minneasota. Sharles has told me over and over again driving like that is scary. You again painted the wrong image of my husband. I had told the caseworker I could have many people for character references. She(Cheryl Hyink) thought I was lying. She was smart enough to that in her case notes. We are okay and will be fine. I wish you and others were there and here. I learned at school who or what I am. A county CANNOT define me and neither can perceptions. I was season for this. I know evil comes in many shapes, sizes, cultures and agencies. I'll send you a copy of the book when I am finished. Sharles

I just have to stand up here for Sharles. I was a college roommate of Sharles and what is being portrayed of him by Jeffco prosecuter is far from the person I know. Sharles has always been a man of his convictions, one who speaks with honesty and integrity. Of course I am going to be bias in this situation because Sharles is my friend. But, to many times in my career I have seen organizations such as Jefferson County push the blame for their own actions on to someone else that they feel they can just push around. Sharles however, is not a man who can be pushed around. He does not bully you or threaten you. He simply calls your own integrity into question when you go back on your word. So someone needs to make sure they are willing to tell truth and admit if they made a mistake. In this case I believe that would be the Jefferson County Prosecutor.

  • Rebekiah Johnson 02/19/2009 11:34:00 PM

Back then we weren't just having "problems"... Our problems stemmed from the extreme amount of emotional situations we were going through at the time. I had a miscarriage... that was devastating. I stopped talking with my husband and eventually had to quit my job because I just could not handle it emotionally. After the miscarriage my husband's father was murdered. He had bleeding on the brain and the hospital he went to sent him home w/ ibuprofen for headaches. He died shortly after this. My husband was close w/ his father and he shut down after this. My husband wanted to grant his father the one wish he knew he could help with... his father always wanted his son (Brandon) to get out of the city. He offered to let Brandon live with us back in Colorado... this ended up not being an easy situation. We jumped from having a 4 year old to dealing w/ a teenager who wanted to do his own thing. This was a difficult situation which was compounded by the fact that his biological mother and grandmother would call our house at all hours of the day putting things into Brandons head that shouldn't have been there. A police had to talk w/ these relatives and tell them to not call our house or charges would be pressed. It was a DIFFICULT time in our life... we were hardly holding on after the situations we both had to personally endure. And after Jeffco got involved... things just went downhill from there. A social service agency is supposed to SERVICE the PUBLIC and HELP in situations... but they did not help with anything... they continued to make the situation worse with their own prejudices and preconceptions. My husband was the only strength that I had at that time... had he not been there... I can't even imagine how things would have turned out. His belief in God and knowing that the truth would eventually be heard gave him the strength to help us through that time in our life. Hopefully even now... more of the truth is being heard.

Though the home (Mount St. Vincent) has progressed considerably in 30 years and is now a positive force in the community, at that time residents, including myself, were subject to physical abuse by the staff, being locked in closets, religious indoctrination, and many other egregious practices. Needless to say, the story of your family hit resonated with me. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you are paranoid - You see the world more clearly than most.

Correction I was working for CCA and had not been at Target for 3 years. I was not at the police academy just to show the kids all officers don't have a problem. I had to work through things myself. I know Sharles explained to you the whole process he took them through to change the kids perspectives of law enforcement and culture. When they were in Maryland the sound or sirens and officers would freak them out and they would scramble to their father. They know he would protect them. As I get time I will correct the mistakes and misinformation.

This is what happens when you get caught up with Jefferson County government and court system. They do not like to loose and will follow this all the way through even when the case might not go in their favor. I feel sorry for this man and his family. he has Judge Russell who is known not to be neutral and more often than not leans toward the prosecutors. We all know this. Judge Russell did not fair well in her scoring when it came to neutrality. If Mr. Johnson looses and she doesn't like him,he might as well forget what the effects it will have on his children. She will "Judge" and sentence according to what the District attorney would like. Maybe people will vote not to retain her the next time she comes up, in 2010.

My husband and I spoke with Mr. Johnson. We wondered who did the evaluation about him being "paranoid" and obsessive. From what we gathered it's as though, this is how he deal with situations. He is a very smart man, who was even typecasted by Westword. Mr. Johnson told us he's still his old self. Classic middle-child as he mentioned us and he said he told the reporter. Great article, bad county, perception is "off" about the father. Will somebody get it right!?

  • Jennifer H 12/15/2008 10:39:00 PM

It's sad to see Jefferson county spends so much time and MONEY on this man. I feel as though they have stolen money from the residents and our county commissioners are doing what? The Judges,Commissioners,District Attorney and the Social Service director all either need to get fired or resign. If I were this guy I'd do much more to bring "change" to Jefferson County Government. The bottom line is either you are the solution or the problem.

Sounds like Jefferson County started something with this man and his family. He did what a father was suppose to do. He beat the enemy coming against and trying to invaded his castle. I guess he showed them there is ONE king and Queen, the county wasn't happy about that. I wonder how did he do in his Treatment plan? I heard it's a bunch of crap, would love to ask this guy or have him comment. It's about time some told what was going on in Jefferson County Human Services. We all know it's the OTHER counties that have problems. Way to go Johnson. He's getting it back though.

Was this article to help the family or just to get a story out. I read the web site I don't hear the ranting. I do hear what people need to be looking for and what stereotypes are out there. If the family looses their father because of westword, they should sue the paper. If this guy did something that no other parent has done. Then why or how could he react or be effected like other paper. I don't think this really gave them justice. This sounded much like he's an angry black man. Westword editor and writer should be ashamed of themselves. Give the guy much more respect than this

  • Derek 12/12/2008 2:12:00 AM

I read the web site. I fail to see the "ranting." Was this article to HELP the family or make it look like there is something wrong with a man who won his kids back. I question the intentions of the writer and editor. It seems to me that this guy still has his head on after all of that evil. I think you should have given him more justice than that. You make him seem like the "angry" black man! He has done something that parents don't do. Why would you think his responses and mental state would be the same. Was this feature about the "family" or just putting information out about Jefferson County. If he looses his case he should sue West word. I'll email him and see what he has to say. Dg

Great story, but unfortunate that such a story had to be written in this day and age and in America, a supposed free society. Several of our members are fighting their own battles against Child Protective Services, Human Services, or various city governments that have stolen children, property, and peace of mind. Check out our website: www.SovereignAmericanForum.com and email us if you want to attend one of our Wednesday meetings to learn more and get involved. Stand up for your rights. If we care not for our rights whats to stop those we elect to protect them from treating our rights the same way, with passive indifference?

Geez!! What a farce. And this is what happens to people who are targeted by the "LAW". I thought sure these people were in some foreign country and not the good old USA. The,, again, it might have been better is they had been in another country. Then, the good old boys (and girls) could come riding to the rescue on their not so white horses.

Jeffco government is a cesspool. Proven, time and again. I'm surprised that people who don't work for the county, continue to live there.

Sounds like the previous guy who commented has some serious issues. Aren't we all a little to old to be writing boo hoo. It seems like we have just read the actual "scums" comments. I wonder if he is just jealous, he couldn't do this or he doesn't have the stamina in his own personality! Maybe his life has no real meaning. Could it be because this dads upbringing and background brings his to a minimum. It does make you wonder who gave up on this person? Sorry adalbert got to call it as it is!! Maybe it's the "interracial" problem he's having and calling it dysfunctional? Aren't we beyond that. I understand Jeffco, but Denver!! Adalbert grow up and find a meaning somewhere. this is half the man you hope to be and the father you should. The writer tried to do them justice but should've left out some choice words.

  • adalbert 12/04/2008 7:45:00 PM

Sounds like this are typical disfunctional scum. Boo hoo.

I have known Sharles since he was 16 yrs old. He asked you to call me. I have neither known him to be obsessive or paranoid. As a teenager he was always a "digger", he looks for the truth and accepts it even if he doesn't like it. His parents taught him to find out information for himself. I thought he'd grow up to be a lawyer or investigator. I find it hard to be scouring emails and up at all hours with 6 children 9 years and under. Would you not be up when your children are asleep, would that not be the time for yourself and to get done what needs to be done! You did not give him the respect that he deserves.

  • Sharles Johnson 12/03/2008 11:47:00 PM

Danielle harmed her own case, we tried to get her to exercise her rights and she gave the county more time to violate her rights to a review panel. She was reactive against the case workers before I came along. Danielle fed into their accusations and was aggressive in attitude and language. So with my name being added that didn't help. I have never reacted, cursed or jumped at the case worker.
