Lights, Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

There are very few places in Denver where you’ll see bactrian camels, hippopotami, howler monkeys, komodo dragons, polar bears and sea lions after dark — unless you’re walking about the Denver Zoo during Zoo Lights, of course.

Zoo Lights is a holiday tradition full of live animal demonstrations and holiday entertainment that runs every evening from now through January 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. More than a hundred animated animal sculptures will be brilliantly illuminated on the zoo’s 38 acres — and this year, the Zoo Lights will be 100 percent environmentally friendly, starting with the use of LED bulbs. Tonight will feature a visit from Santa and an animal ice-carving garden created from 300-pound blocks of ice.

If you get chilly, there are warming stations throughout the zoo, and you can always head indoors to visit animals like Mimi and Dolly in the pachyderm building or the baby gi-raffe, Timber, in the giraffe house.

Ticket prices range from $4 to $8 (free for kids two and younger) and can be purchased at the zoo, 2300 Steele Street, or online at www.denverzoo.org. Call 303-376-4846.
Dec. 12-Jan. 4, 5-9 p.m., 2008
