The Nature of Things

Sound Circle hosts a seasonal concert without an agenda.

Love music, but don’t believe in Santa? What about that rigmarole about the manger and the three kings? Is that nothing more than a good yarn to you? Sound Circle feels your pain. Once a year, the 21-voice Boulder women’s a cappella ensemble riffs on the seasonal themes brought forth by the turning point of winter to host its annual Sound Circle Solstice Concert, a nature-driven program of eclectic music.

“It’s one of the few concerts this time of year that speaks to the deeper meaning of the solstice season,” says director Sue Coffee. “We include no Christmas mu-sic or standard religious holiday music, so it’s like an oasis for people who feel the spirit of the time of year but don’t want it translated through the holiday lens.” What you’ll get instead is a non-traditional repertoire ranging from a Lucinda Williams tune to the premiere of a work by Denver composer Scott Higgins.

Tonight’s final seasonal performance begins at 7 p.m. at Columbine Unity Church, 8900 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder; tickets are $15 to $20, and reservations for the popular concert are recommended. Call 303-473-4525.
Fri., Dec. 12, 7 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 13, 7 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 14, 4 p.m.; Mon., Dec. 15, 7 p.m., 2008
