Love holiday theater but feel downright nauseated imagining another year of salty Scrooge and pathetic Tiny Tim? Of dancing nutcrackers and Rudolph with his nose so obviously lit by a battery-powered forty-watt lightbulb? Who can blame you? If just one more anthropomorphized tale of redemption or adventure is likely to send you off the deep end of the spiked punch bowl, consider HUMBUG, A Comedy Alternative to Traditional Holiday Shows.

“It’s very, very different than traditional holiday productions,” says Carol Roper, whose Celebrationworks Theatre Company is presenting the show. “We’re not that sweet. The whole Sugarland, Santa, Tiny Tim thing — we’re not there at all. These plays are really very fresh and all original.”

Go easy on that Glogg. This year, let six short comedies, with titles such as “The Bipolar Express,” “Vampyre Holiday” and “Mel’s Hanukkah Surprise” — and plot lines following seductive Santas, UFOs, blood-sucking nannies and gay home-health-care workers — provide you with some well-deserved pain relief (and keep you out of rehab).

HUMBUG plays this weekend and next at Vintage Theatre, 2119 East 17th Avenue, with two champagne-toast shows on December 31 and a newly added evening show on December 21. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. (Fridays/Saturdays) and 2:30 p.m. (Saturdays/Sundays). Tickets are $17 in advance or $22 at the door (New Year’s Eve prices are slightly higher).
