Ice Men

Rock on Ice returns to Crested Butte.

Anyone who thinks ice is merely frozen water should spend some time with the Rock on Ice team based in Columbus, Ohio. A particular type of ice is so important for carving that last year, team members loaded down a tractor trailer with Columbus-made ice and drove just over 1,400 miles to Crested Butte for the Rock on Ice festival. Although this year is a little less freezer-intensive (they’re buying their ice in Denver), the Rock On crew is back and ready for two days of chainsaw-blazing, ice-block-chopping fun.

Today and tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. at the Mountaineers Square, 620 Gothic Road, the Rock on Ice team will engage in sculpting demonstrations, speed sculpting competitions and lots of family fun. Highlights include an ice garden in the Mountain Square courtyard, cool photo opportunities — like a giant ice throne — and tomorrow night’s finale, at 6 p.m. at 9380 Prime restaurant, 500 Gothic Road. “It’s a really fun event, especially for kids,” says media contact Alison Yeary. “The finale is a staged ice-sculpting performance and speed competition complete with lights and rock and roll.”

Admission is free. For more information, go to www.skicb.com/cbmr/things-to-do/rock-on-ice.aspx or call 1-800-810-7669.
