Telling Stories

Keep the little ones occupied with Hay Bales & Tall Tales.

It’s official: The holidays are over. Whether you celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule or just New Year’s Eve — the decorations can come down, the wrapping paper can be put away, and any kids in your household can begin studiously preparing to return to school in another week or so.

Yeah, right.

Those aforementioned children are probably already tired of whatever gifts they might have received this holiday season and are sending up the age-old whine that all parents dread: “I’m booooooooooored.”

Have no fear. Relief is easy to find…at least for today. Load up the car, pack in the kids and head for Four Mile Historic Park, 715 South Forest Street, for the monthly Hay Bales & Tall Tales storytelling event. “During the winter months, Hay Bales has been held inside, down by the fireplace in Grant Hall, so that sets a really good ambience,” explains Four Mile development associate MacKenzie Rauert. “Sometimes it can be held outdoors in one of our barns, where there’s hay bales for kids to sit on.” Either way, the munchkins will be shielded from the weather while they listen to a tale that relates to Four Mile’s interpretive time period (Colorado between 1850 and 1899), followed by hot chocolate and a simple game or craft.

Hay Bales & Tall Tales begins at 11 a.m., and admission is free today. For information, call 720-865-0800 or visit www.fourmilehistoricpark.org.
