Brawlin' Barkley
Charles Barkley, the 6’ 5” former power forward for the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, made a name for himself by being outspoken and irreverent. Currently a TV basketball analyst, Barkley has also considered running for governor of Alabama, first as a Republican and now as a Democrat. His conservative cred always seemed to be more about shaking expectations than ideology, but he once explained the shift in his alliances like this: “I was a Republican until they lost their minds.” It was the candidacy of Barack Obama that made him turn completely blue, however. As an Arizonan, he said during a CNN interview, he respected John McCain but that the term “conservative” made him sick and that members of the religious right were “fake Christians.” (Tell us what you really think, Charles.) And he doesn’t hide the fact that race has something to do with politics as well. His thoughts on race and other issues can be found in "Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man?," in which he has conversations with Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton, Morgan Freeman and George Lopez.
