Time to burn off all those beer-guzzling, turkey-eating, Christmas-cookie calories. But instead of hitting the gym, how does snowshoeing in some deep powder sound? If you like being outdoors better than sweating on a treadmill, then head to Echo Lake for free snowshoeing lessons during the fun annual Winter Trails event.

Winter Trails runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lessons and hundreds of demo snowshoes for adults and children, plus guided hikes and free giveaways hosted by a trio of recreation and winter sports companies: the American Hiking Society, the Cross Country Ski Areas Association and SnowSports Industries America (SIA).

One of the more appealing facts about snowshoeing (which is essentially hiking in the snow) is how it can help improve health while burning more than 600 calories per hour, according to the SIA. That’s about 45 percent more calories than walking or running at the same speed.
