Eat, drink and be merry on inauguration day

If you’re happy about no more Bush, clap your hands. If you’re happy about our first black president, clap your hands. If you’re happy and you know it, then your plans will surely show it. And if you’re not happy today, well, there’s always conservative talk radio. The rest of us? We’re calling in patriotic and whoopin’ it up, starting with a free-and-open-to-the-public Inauguration Celebration at Shadow Theatre Company, which will project all the events and festivities from our nation’s capital on a big screen inside the theater, 1468 Dayton Street in Aurora, and two more TVs in the lobby. Food and drinks (including a full bar) will be available for purchase starting at 9 a.m.

By late afternoon, we’ll likely be so high on freedom and drunk on democracy that we’ll need a tiny come-down nap before heading to the Oriental Theater for the NW Community Inauguration Party, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a pre-party featuring heavy hors d’oeuvre, open bar, silent auction and entertainment by a DPS School of the Arts jazz combo. Starting at 7:30 p.m., we’ll revel in the party’s patriotic theme as house band The Lovely and Talented backs up more than a dozen of Denver’s most spirited musicians performing American-themed pop songs all damn night. Then we’ll go home and sleep, happy to be waking up in a better America.

The Oriental is at 4335 West 44th Avenue. Tickets for the pre-party are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and include admission to the 7:30 p.m. concert.
