“The Bible is a book. It's a good book, but it is not the only book.” So said Henry Drummond, the Clarence Darrow character played by Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind, the film that fictionalized the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, pitting science against religion in a twentieth-century courtroom battle that, amazingly, still hasn’t been completely resolved. It’s a witty phrase, but one written by a playwright, for a drama that made one hell of a movie.

Now a staged representation of Darrow’s own words (and those of his verbal opponent, Bible-thumper William Jennings Bryan), The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial, Peter Goodchild’s dramatization based on the original court transcripts, comes to Boulder for one night as part of the CU Artist Series, with Hollywood actors Ed Asner (as Bryan) and John Heard (as Darrow) in tow.
