Ladies First

CU-Boulder salutes women’s work.

Before she died, in 2005, Ofelia Miramontes lent a loud voice in support of diversity on the CU-Boulder campus and bilingual education in the world at large. In her memory, each spring CU presents the Miramontes Music and Art Festival, a condensed outburst of multi-disciplinary events focusing on cultural contributions by women. This year’s fest, which begins March 4, continues the celebratory note with a whirlwind three-day schedule of workshops, social events, concerts and performances touching on everything from a talk and cooking demo with Centro Latin Kitchen chef Melissa Harrison (and former Top Chef contestant, along with winner and fellow Boulderite Hosea Rosenberg) to a participatory veil-dancing demo with Lisa Goodrich.

It all culminates on Friday with a show by off-the-wall, all-girl comedian Natasha Leggero, who comes to the stage of CU’s Old Main Theater at 8 p.m. with a long line of credits trailing behind her, including memorable roles on Reno: 911!, MTV’s The 70s House, The Sarah Silverman Program, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the movie He’s Just Not That into You. Concurrently, Denver band Bela Karoli will perform in Club 156 in the UMC. Most events are free (there’s a $5 fee for Bela Karoli); for a complete schedule and details, log on to http://miramontesfestival.org.
