Life Story

A local journalist becomes a playwright.

You probably best know Dave Flomberg — our colleague and competitor at the late Rocky Mountain News, where he followed the nightlife beat — from his public face. But, to use his own term (and one borrowed from newspaper lingo), the “below the fold” Flomberg is a little more remote, though he’s kept a blog of the same name going online now for seven years, if you’d ever cared to find it. Well, long story short, his sister and Equinox Theatre Company mover and shaker Deb Flomberg did, and she was struck by how dramatically his personal musings came across upon rereading them. The stage producer in her saw a play, even if it would be a hard sell to convince the playwright.

“I first pitched it to him over drinks at the P.S. Lounge,” Deb says. “It took about three rounds to convince him this would be a good idea. It’s pretty personal stuff.” But he finally agreed, and the result is Below the Fold: A Blog on Stage, a mostly true memoir in which a Jewish guy marries a non-Jewish gal, and life ensues. Below performances continue on Sunday afternoons and Monday and Tuesday evenings through March 24; for tickets, $15 to $17 (or $10 if purchased in advance for the last three performances), call 720-984-0781.
Sundays, 2:30 p.m.; Mondays, Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: March 8. Continues through March 24, 2009
